James Newton is an award-winning documentary director whose bold and distinctive films have earned him multiple BAFTAs, an Emmy and a Royal Television Society Award. His acclaimed work includes The Detectives (BBC2), which received two BAFTA nominations in 2016, Gun No. 6 (BBC2), winner of the 2019 BAFTA for Best Single Documentary, and Netflix’s The Surgeon’s Cut, which won BAFTA, Emmy and RTS awards in 2021. Most recently, he received the BAFTA Craft Award for Best Factual Director and a nomination for Best Single Documentary for Grenfell: The Untold Story.
His talent and passion for documentary cinematography was first recognised with a Kodak commercials award in 2006 and after winning a David Lean Scholarship, James graduated from the National Film and Television School in 2007 with an MA in documentary.
